CHAPTER ELEVEN

Rory grabbed Lindsey and pulled her away from the box as she continued to scream. He hauled her to his chest, keeping her shielded, but his own gaze remained focused on the Styrofoam shipping cooler.

A tiny hand, the size of a small child’s, blood soaked, lay packed in dry ice.

Faith? Oh God, Faith! his heart roared in terror. Everything within him recoiled. For an instant, the only thing that existed in the world was that hand and Lindsey screaming in his arms.

Before he could move, before his brain could function again, the agent who had answered the door had the delivery man up against the wall and was searching him for weapons. Trey had donned gloves and was down on one knee before the box, examining the contents closely.

“It’s not real,” Trey growled and shifted the box slightly.

Underneath the blood and gore, at the base of the wrist, Rory saw a metal post protruding.

“An armature,” Trey continued. “It’s probably a hand off a mannequin.” He leaned closer. “The blood isn’t real either. Most likely stage blood.”

Thank God!

“Lindsey,” Rory murmured, pulling her into the living room and away from the gruesome sight. She was still screaming, and Rory knew she had not heard Trey’s words. “It’s not real, honey,” he said softly but firmly. “It’s not Faith.”

But Lindsey kept screaming.

Rory’s heart shattered into tiny pieces. He was losing her to this. But shit, could he blame her? He gripped her shoulders firmly. “Lindsey!” he barked, shaking her slightly. “It’s not real!”

The moan she uttered made his blood run cold. She tried to twist away from him.

“It’s not real!”

She blinked up at him. Sweet Jesus, the terror in her eyes—suddenly, Rory wanted to scream too.

“It’s not real, sweetheart. It’s not Faith.”

She sagged against him, her knees buckling as she tried to suck in a breath but failed.

“I’ve got you,” he whispered, lifting her into his arms and carrying her into the bedroom. “Just hold on, sweetheart. I’ve got you.” As he passed by the entryway, he looked at Trey. “Get a doctor up here now.” He refused to lose her to a nervous breakdown, but he feared that was exactly what she was experiencing.

Trey nodded and pulled out his cell.

Rory paced nervously before the bedroom door while the doctor was in with Lindsey. How long was this going to take? His nerves were shot. While his relief knew no bounds that the hand was not real, his worry over what Lindsey was suffering possessed his heart.

He tried to gather his wits, to think like an investigator should, but he failed miserably. The fear that he would revisit his failure over that first case wouldn’t leave him. That case had nearly destroyed him, and now his daughter’s life was on the line.

The doctor finally stepped out, his expression grim. “I gave her a tranquilizer,” he said softly. “She’s out for the rest of the night.”

Rory nodded.

“I’m giving her a prescription for anxiety, but she’s going to need more support than that.” He handed Rory a business card.
